Stop And Think before You Create or Download an Mp3 ringtone

You are on the street, in a cafe, or in a store, you hear your favorite song on someone’s phone set as a ringtone.  You immediately think, my ringtone is boring.  I need to change it, even though you just changed it a week ago.

Each week new songs come onto the market.  Each week new songs and tracks are added to every popular site where you can download them onto your phone as a ringtone.   Each week these sites are making money.   Maybe you are even one of their regular customers.

Yet, there are some things you should think about before you download or create your next ringtone.

The first thing you should consider is if the site you are uploading from is a legal site.   Yes, there can be illegal Mp3 files that are used for ringtones just as there are illegal sites that contain regular Mp3 files or whole tracks of songs floating around across the internet.

If you download a track from any site, try to make sure it is a reputable site first.  Reputable sites are sites that have obtained licenses that give them permission to use any and all Mp3 files as ringtones.  How can you tell if a site is reputable?  One way to tell is if you have to pay for the ringtone.   Sites that charge you a fee are usually reputable.  One such site is ITunes.  On the other hand, sites that will give you unlimited downloads for free or almost for free, could very well have no licenses for these files that they are supposedly allowing you to use, at all.  No license means the files are illegal for them to use and illegal for you to upload and use.

What about creating your own Mp3 files and turning these into your own ringtone?  Is this legal? It depends.  To answer this question, first you have to be honest about where you got the music or the original Mp3 track.   Do you own the license to duplicate it?   This means did you buy the CD or track?   If you did, then it is completely legal to use them.   But there is a catch.

ITunes will not allow you to rip the ringtone right inside their site?   Why?  The company of course would be losing business.  This sounds selfish.  But think about the thousands of songs downloaded each day.  Now think about the possible hundred you have downloaded.  If you are allowed to turn those songs into ringtones, won’t they lose your money?

Creating your own ringtones can be complicated.  But it may be doable and legal.  Just do use your own MP3 files.  Once you create the ringtone, do not share them with anyone (even if it is not for profit).  This means no matter how much your best friend begs you to share that new number one ringtone with him/her, stay firm, say no.

You can buy software programs that will help you to create or turn your legal Mp3 files into ringtones.  You can also use free online sites that won’t make you download any programs to turn your files into ringtones.   Many of these are easy to use.  But again, remember to only upload the tracks or files that you can legally use.

Another thing to think about when it comes to uploading ringtone is the kind of phone you have?  Some phones will allow you to create your own ringtone and these ringtones will even be functionally, too.  Other phones will not allow you to create your own or upload any unless; you buy special USB plugs to upload the songs.  The Iphone may be the hardest phone to create a ringtone for, without suffering any problems.

What about transferring ringtones?  Is this a hard process?  Again, this depends on the phone.  The iPhone has made this easier, if you purchase an itoner. An itoner is a device that will help you to transfer ringtones more easily when you use the iphone.   You can do it without resetting your iphone.  You just simply drag and drop the Mp3 file into the window, hit the sync button.   Presto, you are done.  This device generally costs about $15.00.  Other phones may also allow you purchase similar devices or special USB cords, as well.

You could save yourself a lot of trouble and just purchase the ringtones you want (especially if you have an iPhone).  Prices for most ringtones are 99 cents.   This price has many consumers angry because this is also the going price to download a full music track, yet, a ringtone usually only lasts 30 seconds where a track will last possibly two to three minutes, depending on the song.

Is it worth 99 cents and no hassle for you to be the able the current number one song the next time someone calls you?
